The Wave of Surrender

There is a pool, and beyond it, the ocean.

I usually have a wonderful time with the ocean,
except for one day,
when she decided to teach me a lesson.

At first, she was kind.
We spent hours playing, loving, being together.
Eventually, I grew tired and decided it was time to leave.
I kissed her goodbye,
promising I’d return the next day

I turned to walk away,
but she wouldn’t let me go.
She held onto my body, pulling me back.
Her voice, once gentle, grew louder and faster.
Frustrated, I turned to face her.
And then, she hit me.

With all her strength,
she dragged me down,
pinned me to the sand,
forcing me to stay.

For every stroke I fought against her,
she pushed back harder.
The more I resisted,
 the more she punished me.
It was a battle I could never win.
The only choice left was to surrender.

And so I did.

I gave her permission to take me,

to do with me as she pleased.

As the ocean pushed me and pulled me,

I opened my eyes,

gazing up blissfully.

I watched the crashing waves
give birth to tiny bubbles
who dance around with joy
before they would pop
and go back to being nothing.

Another wave crashed,
 and more bubbles were born,
only to fade away again,
 becoming part of everything.

In that moment, I understood.
I, too, am a bubble.
One day, I will pop as well.
Going from something to nothing,
and nothing to everything.
That day,
 may be now.

As I completely let go,
accepting my fate
surrendering to the reality of nature,
my body aligned with the ocean’s rhythm.
She gently brought me safely back to the shore
and kissed me goodbye.

I think I’ll just swim in the pool today.
